To begin, let’s first define exactly what we mean
when we say we are “too busy”. For me, too busy means that someone is spending
a lot of time doing things they must
do instead of things that they want
to do. Would you agree with that? No one says that they are too busy watching
the super bowl or sitting on the beach in Hawaii, right? We are too busy when
we don’t have the time to enjoy ourselves.
Knowing that, did you ever notice that people that
enjoy their work never say that they are too busy? It’s because their work is
not work to them, it is a passion and they love doing it. That is what
separates those of us with a “full schedule” from those of us that are “too
busy”. Choosing the right profession and enjoying what you do to make a living
is probably one of the most important decisions you will make in your lifetime.
Aside from sleep you spend more hours at work than anything else that you do
and that’s a lot of time to be unhappy.
It’s strange that in today’s digital age we spend so
much time not having enough of it. Remember the days when you needed to drive
to the library and find the right reference book to do a school assignment or
answer a question? Today we simply Google it in seconds and the answer appears
instantaneously on our little magic box. We certainly don’t spend time washing
our clothes (or dishes) by hand if we don’t choose to and when’s the last time
you needed to chop wood to heat your home?
The truth is we should have more leisure time than
ever before but somehow we don’t. Maybe that’s because there are so many
distractions that slow us down and keep us from focusing on the things we
should be doing at the time. Did you ever have something important to do but
just couldn’t break yourself away from that incredibly interesting movie that
just came on HBO? Did you ever notice how much less interesting that movie
seems to be if you don’t need to do something that you don’t really want to do?
Maybe the next time you are feeling “too busy” you
should be more honest with yourself. It could be time to take a look at your
career choices and lifestyle as well. You owe it to yourself to do something
that fulfills more than just your financial needs. If you know what truly
inspires you than go for it! If you don’t than now is a good time to find out.
If you do what you love and love what you do you will find that being “too
busy” is impossible.
