I, for one, think they are great. You can find as many causes to contribute to as you can possibly imagine but there is a difference between these types of charities and many others. When you contribute to most charities you never really know whom you are helping but with these types of websites you can contribute to an actual person and only to that person.
One of my favorite sites is gofundme. I have seen people asking for help for every circumstance that you can imagine: Medical expenses for a friend or loved one, college tuition for a student in need, an operation for the family pet or even help for refugees in various countries; it’s all there. It’s amazing how much a small donation such as $10 can quickly add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a worthy cause.
You should know however that these sites do charge a fee for their services. I don’t find that to be unreasonable because even charities have expenses, right? The fees vary under different circumstances but the average fee for this particular site is 7.9% + $.30 per donation. The fee however is not charged to the person donating the money; it is deducted from the funds that are made available to the person in need of help. On average I guess that a person that receives $100,000 in donations actually receives around $92,000 of the actual money.
If you take the time to do some research you will find that many of the largest and oldest charities do not manage to get such a large percentage of their donations to the people that actually need the help. All in all I think I like the idea of being able to donate online to help others. Do you have a favorite charity that you donate to from time to time? I’d love to hear about it and the reasons why you chose that particular way of helping others.
