Luck, Fate or Neither?

According to Wikipedia, luck is "a purposeless, unpredictable and uncontrollable force that shapes events favorably or unfavorably for an individual, group or cause." Do you believe that this “purposeless” force actually exists? Or perhaps you believe more in fate. I suppose fate is similar to luck in that we would have no control over either of them but it seems that fate does serve a purpose. Like luck however, fate is also unpredictable and uncontrollable. Do you believe that either of these two things exists? Many people believe in both.

The problem with believing in such things is that it means we have no control over our lives and I don’t like that thought very much. As an example, if you really do have incredibly bad luck or if fate has somehow preordained that you will never be successful in business than this would mean there’s nothing you could possibly do to change your future. No matter how hard you try or high bright you might be you are doomed to failure. Can this be true?

I like to think that our future is determined by those things we do today. A doctor becomes a doctor because he/she studied hard and graduated from medical school, no luck there I think. A successful business person is where they are today because they had a vision, they took risks and above all, they were persistent. I don’t consider this to be fate; I consider it to be the logical outcome of a lot of time and effort put forth by the now successful person.

Still, I must admit that there are situations where one does seem to be incredibly lucky or fortunate beyond reason. What about the sole survivor of a terrible plane crash that killed everyone else on board or the person that wins $250 million playing the lottery even though this is the first time they ever bought a ticket? Yes, sometimes things do happen that seem to be beyond “normal” and we wonder how these things are possible.

But luck, fate or whatever name you want to give it isn’t always kind. I recently watched a television show about a man that was struck by lightening7 times! Talk about bad luck! I don’t know anyone personally that has taken even one direct hit from lightening. The odds of this happening to one person 7 times are astronomical and will cause the most logical of persons to at least consider the possibility of fate or luck.

Regardless of whether you believe in a predetermined destiny or a propensity to have good fortune in life, there is one thing we can all agree on: Hard work, determination and persistence are a sure way to determine your future, at least to some extent. Without effort there can be no reward, unless you are incredibly lucky of course!
