It seems that there is nothing more important for some folks than the release of the newest hottest Smartphone. Technology changes quickly and some people simply must have the latest gadget available while others are happy with their 5 year old basic phone. Believe it or not, I even know a few people that have no cell phone at all. That’s hard for me to imagine. Like most of you, I depend heavily on my phone and would be lost without it. But I do wonder if it’s necessary to always upgrade to the newest model.
I can think of no better example of this than the Apple iPhone. You’ve probably seen it too; people waiting in long lines, advance orders and all the press releases touting the new features months before the new model is even available. It reminds a little of the Oscars! It’s amazing how much excitement the latest gadget can cause.
You might be surprised to find out that the vast majority of people don’t even own a Smartphone. About 1/3 of mobile phone users in the U.S. do but 2 out of 3 phones sold are much more basic models without all the bells and whistles. I think it’s fair to say that business people (such as myself) and technology lovers probably comprise the majority of Smartphone owners. Would you agree with that?
Still, for me the basic question is “Is it really necessary to upgrade when each new model becomes available”? To be honest, I don’t think it is. An older iPhone, Android or other type Smartphone is usually sufficient for most users’ needs. The truth is that the older models can do just about anything that the newer models can do and in most cases that is enough. Still, there is something exciting about getting the latest gadget on the market and, for many people, it is a must!
