Happiness is a choice
You’ve heard this before but do you realize just how much your attitude affects every aspect of your life? Most people think that they do but in reality they really don’t “get it”. Believe it or not no matter what has happened to you in your life it had something to do with your attitude. Yes, even those things that seemed completely beyond your control were in the end controlled to some extent by your outlook and attitude in life.
Recently I read a true story about a man that had lost everything in his life, I mean everything. He was married to a foreign woman and they had 2 children together. He had met her overseas and eventually they returned to the U.S. to start a new life together. Eventually she began to miss her native country and she wanted to return home to see family and friends. The man agreed completely but due to a very demanding work schedule he could not take the time to go with his wife and children. They decided that she would take the children and go for a 1 month visit while he remained in America.
This decision would change his life forever. The plane that his wife and children were on didn’t make it to its destination. It went down over the ocean and there were no survivors but that was just the beginning of what was to come. The man spiraled into a depression that cost him his business, his home, and eventually his health. He spent almost ten years trying to kill his pain at the bottom of a vodka bottle but of course that was no answer. Finally he sought the help of a professional and believe it or not was able to recover from all that had happened to him.
Today that same man is married again. His business is doing better than it ever had the first time around and he is as happy as he has ever been. Does this seem impossible to you? Do you think that you could never do what he did? You would be very wrong. It wasn’t the terrible tragedy of losing his family that caused him to lose his business, his home and even his positive outlook on life; it was the way that he responded to it.
I’m not saying that it’s easy to recover from such a terrible tragedy but I am saying that each and every one of us has the ability to improve our lives regardless of our situation. Happiness begins from the inside and not the other way around. We can’t prevent those things which we have no control over but we can control how much we will allow them to affect our outlook on life.
Our attitude is very much like having the ability to see into the future. How you feel today and what you do to improve your future is determined in a very large part by your attitude. No one on this planet can make you angry, or sad or determine your happiness, it is how you respond to what they do that determines your future, NOT what they have done to you.
Control your outlook on life and you will control your life. Learn to accept the things that you cannot control and always be looking forward. The power to overcome any obstacle is within us all and if we can learn to harness the power of maintaining a positive outlook no matter what happens to us we will become a much happier person regardless of our circumstances. We all know someone that has had some unimaginable tragedy in their lives yet they are always smiling, always happy. You too can be that person if you really want to and the secret is simple; don’t allow your past to determine your future. The future truly is what you make it.
