Amazingly, years later it still hurts

It’s strange how much our childhood can affect our lives forever. Maybe this is something we don’t really think about very often but each and everyone one of us has been forged to a large extent by our past. Some people say that this is not true in their case but it is always true to some degree.

Every person that you know, every coworker, friend and family member is the person that they are today due in large part to their past. How could it be any other way? There are certain things that happen to us when we are young that we never forget. Some are good, some are bad but all are important. While we may not consciously think about the past it is always present.

Think back to the best memory you have as a child, the happiest day you can remember. If you could travel back in time this is where you would like to be. Now think of the worst memory you can remember. It still hurts, it is still painful and none of us like to think about these things. So why am I talking about the past? Because our past is the key to our future.

If you agree that our past has made us who and what we are today than you must agree that today will shape our future as well, right? Remember, the present will soon become the past but there is one huge difference, we can control the present. Every day of our lives we make decisions. Sure, most of them seem small and insignificant but all have consequences. Remember the old saying “Today is the first day of the rest of your life”? It is true so why not start making decisions that will make your future better?

Today is a great day for a new beginning. A good way to begin is to treat others with the same respect and kindness that you didn’t always experience when you were younger. Be careful what you say and how you treat others. The smallest comment or remark could have a big effect on others in their future, good or bad. In the end, if you show love and compassion to others, they will eventually return the favor and in this way you will make a big difference in their lives as well as your own. You may not be able to change the past but the future is up to you.
