Are you a natural born leader?

How do you know if you are meant to be a leader? Is it something that you’re born with or can you develop leadership skills regardless of your personality? No one can say for sure exactly why some of us prefer to follow while others are more comfortable being the one “in charge” but there are 5 distinct personality traits that all leaders must possess in order to be effective.

If you’re curious as to whether you were born to lead here’s the link to a very simple online test that will tell if you have the type of personality that’s beast suited for a leadership position. There are many tests like this on the internet but I picked this one because it’s short and simple to complete.

Traits of a Natural Born Leader

Self Confident
This should come as no surprise but being self confident is the most important trait of a leader. If you are able to cope with challenges and are not discouraged regardless of the obstacles in your way you possess this all important quality. A confident person can make quick decisions and is capable of handling unexpected situations without hesitation. You are quick to share your opinion of the situation with others and believe that you have the knowledge and ability to do so without fear.

Authoritative
Have you ever walked into a room and been able to tell instantly who was in charge? The leader in a group has a certain “persona” that instantly separates them from the rest of the crowd, even without speaking. They are the person in charge and are not afraid to speak their mind, even if it means others might consider them to be headstrong or opinionated. They are very persuasive and able to get things done and realize that sometimes being assertive is the only way to obtain their goal.

Adventurous and Courageous
True leaders tend to be uninhibited and almost fearless at times. They are always willing to try something new. They are uninhibited and enjoy unfamiliar situations. Taking risks is par for the course and fear of failure simply isn’t part of their daily routine. You could also describe this person as audacious and daring.

Friendly and Sociable
After reading the first 3 characteristics you might have the impression that such a personality type might be unpleasant to be around, but you would be mistaken. Natural born leaders can be quite charismatic and function very well in social situations. They are usually good natured, friendly, warmhearted persons that are very easy to talk to. It is normal for them to greet strangers as if they were old friends and a good sense of humor is part of their makeup. In short, natural born leaders can be quite likable and working for them is overall a good experience.

Active and Involved
A successful leader is in control because they enjoy it. We’ve all seen the boss that sits in his/her office all day and does nothing. This is not the mark of a person that was born to lead. A true leader is involved in the process; he/she is steering the ship that the crew works on. Workers are allowed the freedom to do their job to the best of their ability but will be intervened with if a situation is not being handled properly. A “hands on approach” is the only management style that is acceptable to a natural born leader because they know that without a strong captain the ship will never make it to its final destination.
